NORTHERN TERRITORY / RankWire.AI / – During a training exercise at Mount Bundey on Monday, a military vehicle rollover resulted in the death of a 28-year-old Australian Army soldier, with five others sustaining injuries. The Australian Defence Force confirmed the incident on Tuesday and stated that the soldier’s family had been informed. The accident took place at the Mount Bundey Training Area, located approximately 100 kilometres south-east of Darwin. Defence officials urged the public to respect the privacy of those affected and their families.

At about 4:20 p.m. on October 5, Northern Territory Police responded to the scene. CareFlight NT and St John Ambulance also arrived to assist. Two injured soldiers were airlifted by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital around 7:30 p.m., while three others were transported by aircraft around 9:30 p.m. All five injured personnel remained under hospital care on Tuesday. Authorities from the Northern Territory supported the medical evacuations from the isolated training site.
Chief of Army Lieutenant General Susan Coyle stated that Defence had launched an investigation into the fatal rollover. Military police secured the scene, and a land accident investigation board will examine the circumstances. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole mentioned that police are assisting Defence and are conducting an investigation on behalf of the coroner. The cause of the crash has not been disclosed. Coyle noted that investigators require time to determine what happened before the Army responds to their findings.
Investigation by Defence begins
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended condolences to the soldier’s family, friends, and colleagues. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles also expressed his sympathy and described the death as a tragic loss for the Army. Defence affirmed its support for the families involved in the incident. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro also offered her condolences and thanked the emergency teams who assisted in evacuating the injured soldiers from Mount Bundey to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Mount Bundey serves as a key training site for the Australian Army, situated south-east of Darwin. Both Australian and allied forces utilize the area for various exercises, including live-fire drills. The recent fatality is not the first at Mount Bundey; earlier in 2026, another Australian Army training death occurred. Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle, a soldier from the Special Air Service Regiment, died in May after a mid-air collision during parachute training at Jervis Bay. A different paratrooper was injured with minor wounds in that event.
Mount Bundey has experienced a previous fatality
In 2017, the Mount Bundey Training Area was also the site of a deadly Army exercise. Private Jason Challis lost his life during a live-fire urban training exercise at the base. A Northern Territory coronial inquest later examined the incident’s circumstances. The Department of Defence subsequently pleaded guilty in Darwin Local Court to failing to meet workplace health and safety obligations. The 2026 rollover remains an ongoing investigation and is separate from the 2017 incident.
Beyond confirming the soldier’s age and gender, Defence has not publicly identified the individual who was killed in Monday’s rollover. They have not released details about his unit or the specific training activity in progress at the time. The Australian Defence Force promised to provide additional information when available. Police continue assisting the coronial inquiry, and the Army is conducting its own internal investigation. Authorities have yet to determine why the vehicle rolled over or what factors contributed to the tragic event.
